If a tooth has more extensive decay, a dental crown may be the ideal aesthetic and functional restorative solution.
Placing a crown can preserve the natural tooth, which is always our goal because protecting the natural teeth helps maintain the supporting bone structure and stability of the surrounding and adjacent teeth. With proper care and good oral hygiene, dental crowns often last a lifetime.
The traditional method of making a new crown begins with the creation of a digital impression of your teeth and bite. That 3D impression will then be forwarded to a professional dental lab where the crown is made to look and function like your natural tooth. At the same visit, the decayed areas of the tooth will be removed, and a temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth. When your permanent restoration is ready, you will return to the office, and the permanent crown will be seated in your mouth. The doctor will study the interaction of your upper teeth and lower teeth and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit.
Sometimes we are able to create and place the final crown on the same day using advanced 3D technology. Ask your doctor if CEREC®'s same-day technology could be used to preserve your tooth.
