Symptoms to Look For

While root canals treat cracked or badly damaged teeth, they are most commonly used to treat infected teeth.

Pain, particularly when biting and chewing,
Sensitivity to hot or cold
Tenderness and inflammation in the gums surrounding the tooth

Endodontic Procedures

Root Canal Treatment.  Modern technology and techniques have helped make root canal treatment a more straightforward, relatively painless procedure that can save an affected tooth. Root canal, or endodontic treatment, may be necessary when the pulp tissue inside the root canals of a tooth becomes infected or damaged, which can be caused by dental trauma or decay.

Broken and Cracked Teeth.  Symptoms of a broken or cracked tooth vary and may include pain when chewing, temperature sensitivity, pressure sensitivity, or a combination of these. Cracks can sometimes lead to infections in the pulp tissue and spread to the surrounding gum and bone, so seeing a dentist as early as possible is important.

Dental Trauma. Traumatic injuries can result in the need for dental treatment. Fractured or cracked teeth, a displaced tooth, or even a tooth that has been knocked out (avulsed) are common results of dental trauma.

Root Canal Retreatment. Occasionally, a tooth that was treated months or years ago may develop new problems. In these cases, a tooth that previously received endodontic treatment fails to heal or continues to have pain. We may try to save the tooth with a second endodontic procedure.

Pulpotomy (Vital Pulp Therapy).  If the pulp of a tooth becomes infected it can be removed with a pulpotomy. Because this procedure is often performed on deciduous (baby) teeth, it is sometimes called a baby root canal.

Internal Bleaching. It’s common for teeth that have been injured or damaged to darken. This discoloration cannot be treated by conventional teeth whitening treatments—instead, internal bleaching is needed to whiten the tooth from the inside.

Frequently Asked Questions About Endodontic Treatment

How much is endodontic treatment?

Root canal treatment is usually between $700 and $1000 for an incisor and $900 to $1500 for a molar. This price doesn’t include the cost of the crown or restoration that is used to repair and seal the tooth after your root canal. If you have dental insurance, the cost of your root canal should be at least partially covered.

Is endodontic surgery painful?

Contrary to popular belief, root canals and other endodontic procedures are not painful. Your tooth and the area surrounding it will be completely numb before we begin any work. As with any dental procedure, you may experience some discomfort from having to keep your mouth open for an extended amount of time, but you won’t experience pain. After the procedure, you may have some soreness and sensitivity, but over-the-

Is it better to have a root canal or extraction?

If you have a choice between the two procedures, you should always opt for the root canal. By saving your natural tooth, you’re also saving yourself from many inconveniences and complications down the road. Keeping your tooth in place prevents bone loss in the jaw, which can cause a weakened bite, compromise adjacent teeth, and even lead to a prematurely aged appearance. Replacing an extracted tooth with a bridge or dental implant is costly and the recovery from extraction is usually more uncomfortable than that of a root canal. There’s really no reason to choose an extraction instead of a root canal unless a tooth cannot be saved.

How do you keep your tooth white after a root canal?

This is a concern of many patients, which is understandable. We offer internal bleaching treatments for teeth that have had root canals since the color change is from the inside, not from the outside like other causes of tooth discoloration. Cosmetic bonding and dental veneers can also be used to whiten a tooth after a root canal.
