Preventive care is at the heart of what we do as a dental practice. Not only do these services ensure that our patients have healthy smiles, they also help lay the foundation for a lifetime of good oral hygiene habits. Our preventive and diagnostic services include:
Comprehensive Oral Evaluation
Also known as a routine dental check-up, these twice-a-year visits are critical when it comes to preventing cavities and other dental problems. During these visits, we also examine the mouth, head, and neck for any abnormalities.
Dental Cleanings (Prophylaxis)
When plaque isn’t removed by brushing, it becomes a sticky cavity-causing substance called tartar—and the only way to remove tartar is with a professional dental cleaning. Once tartar is removed, teeth are polished to remove stains and create a smooth surface that makes it harder for new plaque deposits to form.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and prevents decay. It’s applied to the teeth in the form of a gel, foam, or varnish during your child’s comprehensive oral evaluation appointments.
Digital Radiographs
In order to identify decay, extra teeth, bone defects, tumors, and other dental issues that are not apparent upon visual examination, we use digital radiographs. These x-rays have lower radiation exposure than traditional x-rays and they can be viewed immediately on our computers.
Oral Hygiene Instructions
An important part of your child’s biannual check-ups is oral hygiene instruction. We teach all of our patients proper techniques for brushing, flossing, and rinsing to reinforce the healthy home habits that keep teeth and gums healthy.
Dental Sealants
Some children naturally have a number of grooves and crevices in their teeth where plaque and tartar can build up and cause cavities. Dental sealants are a safe resin material that is painted on the tooth surfaces to fill these crevices in order to prevent cavities. Getting dental sealants is quick, painless, and effective.
Custom Sports Mouth Guards
The National Youth Sports Foundation for Safety states that dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury sustained during participation in sports; the majority of these dental injuries are preventable.
Mouth guards protect teeth, mouths, and gums. Any child and or adult participating in sports that could potentially incur facial contact resulting in an injury should wear protective equipment including a mouthguard.
